Evaluation

The concept idea of our experimental film was to have a female in her dreams wondering, the plan was to have her going from one location to another. As the female does this she would be hearing different noises. For example on one location there would be lots of noise  where as the next location  she goes to will have a quitter noise. And to be able to achieve this  me and partner decided to record sounds in location that have a massive differences to each other, for example the sound you will get when you are in the church and the sound you will get when you are in WestStreet. The reason why we decided to this is because when it comes to watching our film we wanted to get  a reaction for our audiences. Meaning when our audiences are watching our film we wanted them to keep wanting to watch more so  that they the could find out what the ending could of been. And for that to happen we thought if we have sounds that have massive difference  to each other then our audience would try to guess or want to know where her next location would of been.

The way we planned to project this was by having split screen of our character travelling to different places. The reason for this was so that when our audiences are watching our film they will have two things to concentrate on. The other reason why we decided  to project our film like this was so that when our audiences  are watching our film they will be busy trying to figure our whats happening in the two split screens and our purpose for this was so that we can grab our audiences attention.

However when it came to showing our draft film to our teacher the idea of the dream sequence towards our film change.d. The reason for this was because it gave the story away with out not having to see the film.  And therefore me and my partner took that scene out . This made our film shorter but it was not a problem as we had time to film and get more shots in which we had done. This effected the idea of the film because after deleting the dream scene and then showing a draft to our class, people did not understand the meaning of the story, they didn't understand why she was wondering.  We then took this feed back and worked on our idea, we changed our idea to be a nonlinear film about a the same female in a parallel world. We still used the split screen to make sense of our idea and tried to show the female in a parallel world by having her walking past herself,  as well as doing opposite things to the other one. This was done in the library scene  when one is walking towards the camera backwards and the other one walking away from the camera. We also tried to show it was in a parallel world by having them meet at the end of the film face to face.

Our influences came from different film makers for different specific scene. For  example our first influences was a short film called Choros by Micgeal Langen,  he has influenced us in film by having more than one character to appear in our screen. This is show in our film when the two characters are walking right past each other on the bridge. Our second influence is a film called Inbindable Volume, this film has influenced us on some of our shots as well as location to film our film. From these film we was influenced on the library scene when on of the characters in walking in a reverse shot and the other one walking away from the camera, the other sense that was influenced from these film is the scene in our film  with the wide shot inside the University,   when the character is walking down the stairs. And the third influence in our film is The psychology of dream analysis by  Rian Johnson, for this film we were influenced by the idea of the dream sequence, what we liked about these film is the whole idea of the way the film is told and how it always comes back to the character sleeping,  this reminds us that its in her dreams. Not only that but the colour and lighting in the film, and how its very light in her face when she's asleep and how sometimes in the film its only half of her face filmed.

Our target audience for our film is both male and female. I would say that our film is aimed at people that that desire to know something or feel curies or even doubt. The reason why i say this is because in our film we just have two character walking  and passing by each other and therefore people that like to know or figure out things or  even imagine and create their own meaning to the story are the type of people who our film is aimed at. Having said this our film is aimed at people that like to watch experimental/ nonlinear film as that is the genre of our film. Our film is aimed at people that are the age of 18 and above and the reason why i say this is because that is how old the character is in the film and therefore  people that are in that age group can relate, and also because there is not a lot of people that are below that age that like to watch experimental films.

Looking back at my work as a member of audience i think that the weakness part of the film is telling the story well, and being able to understand what actually is happening in the film. The none-linear part of the story works well but needs to have a stronger idea of what's happening in the film. May be if I was to make that character do something rather than just make her walk would of made more sense to the film, so if i was to redo my  work i would of expanded the idea of the film more and made sure to include more story to the    film. What i think worked well in my film is that way it was shot, i liked how we had lots off different shots and the angle shots we used to produce our film. The other thing i was happy with our finished product was  how we used colour in our film to grab our audiences attention, i thought that this worked well in our film because not only does it grab your attention but also happened to have meanings in our film unintentionally.

To produce our film me and Myles done some pre production work so that we knew what we had to do when it came to filming. We said how i would be in-charge of the sound recording,he  would be in charge of filming and how we would both do the editing. When it came to the post production i done the sound and Myles done the filming,  having said this we did end up doing the post production practically all together and sharing our role. Because i was acting in it Myles had to do some of the recording for the sound and i would sometimes do the filming and come up with some angle shots and ways we can film. So all in one we worked well together as a team and had no problems when it came to  making our project.

When making our film some of the problems we faced would be weather and being able to  film in the church. We had problems with the rain and wasn't able to film on the days we planned we would, and this happened more than once so it killed our time. The other problem we faced was being able to film in the church,  we found that when ever we would go to the church it would be closed or people would be praying and so couldn't film. And if not that then there could be a constructions going on. This was hard for us to record the sound of the bell for the church, so we kept coming back and forth just for that bell sound, which also killed some of our time. We did go to another church to be able to achieve what we wanted to but the same problem accord and so we couldn't.

During the process of making this project i have learnt how to effectively work and communicate well with my partner. Every time something goes wrong or something is not going the way we accord it to happen, i have learnt how to solve as it as team. Not only that but making this project has helped me learn one or two creative skills from my partner. I Have learnt creatively how to make a film work and improve things through the process of editing.

Our strength in the process of this project would have to be working well as a team and being able to communicate and understand each other. I think that we worked well as a group because we would help one another and always let each other know if something was not going right. And also sharing roles and making sure we both had something to do.

Our weakness might be time management and not being able to come up with a clear idea of a film and having to twist and change it around so that it followed the brief.

Post Production

For our  Post Production we used a cannon camera to make our film and tripod so that we had static shots. Our filming took us about 5 days to complete  and the reason for this is because we had some problems getting to places because of the weather and also having access to filming  in the church  because of people praying.

The thing that went well when we was doing our post production is being able to have some good shots in our film and the thing that i thought went bad is having to come back to re-film  some of our shots because of weather problems. reason why i say this is a bad thing is because it wasted our time

Pre Production for Wondering

To be able to produce our film me and Myles done some Pre Production for our idea. The pre production consisted of coming up with an idea which is about a female that is in her dream wondering from one location to another' doing a story board for it so that we knew what it would of looked like and what shots we were going to use, we done Location reconnaissance so that we knew where we would film and if it was a film-able place and lastly we done Shooting schedule so that we both knew the times we were free to film and meet up.

Thinking about the Experimental film

This week  we watched some experimental film in class and then got with our team and started to come up with an experimental film to create . Me and Myles came up with of 'Wondering'  our idea was to have a person in her dream wondering from one place to another, and when this is happening we thought of the sounds that we could use in it. For example from our audio we could use the church and then Weststreet making our sounds louder and then quieter

We then spoke to our lecture about it and he gave us feedbacks and ways we can film it as well as recommended some films for us  to watch which was helpful.
After talking to our lecture me and Myles also done some research of our own on ways of to create our experimental film

Sounds that we recorded after we got our feed back and re-editing

After we got our feed back me and Myles went and read our feedback,  we thought about what we can do and then  meet up again and improved on the sound idea. Most of the comments we had was to make sure that the high heel sound didn't take over most of our sound and so we  made sure to do what we was told to. We went out again and recorded and made sure to go back to the editing room and improved the volume of the other sounds.

The sounds we went and recorded was

  • church bell
  • coffe machine
  • people talking
  • ducks
  • water
  • trees

Presentation/ feed backs For audio

This week we had to present our audio to our class and then get some feed backs from the class as well as the our lecture . I thought that the presentation  didn't go as well as we hoped it would. However I thought that it was very helpful because we had some feed backs and was told what was good and was bad.
Our lecture told ways on  how w we can improve our work and how sometimes the sounds is to obvious and did not need to be. I thought that this was very helpful because it gave us a lot of ways on how to improve our work .
After our feed back me and myles meet and and then discussed about what we can do to make  the improvements .

Editing Audio

When it came to editing our Audio we had some problems and some of those problems were :

  • uploading sounds and having no volume
  • having sounds that did not sound good at all and having to change them, which meant that we would have to go out again and find more sounds to record.
  • Church, Cafe,  and Weststreet bits of sounds missing
However we did mange to edit the sounds we had and made them sound good and experimented on them by using Pro Tools .

I think that editing went well we did work well with what we had and made it sound as good as we could the  thing that went bad is having some missing fills.

Audio Production

To produce our audio project we used H4N Zoom recorder. It was important that we used this tool because it picked up the sound well and didn't have problems whilst we were recording,
Over all i thought that the recording went well , we made sure that we meet up on the days and times we said we would to record  sound, in which we did. Because of that reason it all went well.

However we did face some problems and those problem was when we went to  record sometimes there would be people and noises that we did not want in our sound. However this problem was sorted out easily by being able to cut the unwanted sound or meeting up again and then recording the sounds.

The places where we went to get our sounds from was:

  • Church
  • Park
  • cafe( University)
  • Westreet
  • Near shopping centres - For constriction sounds

Audio Pre production

To produce our audio me and Myles had to do some pre-prodction work. This was things like:

  • Audio planing
  • visiting the places we was going to film and asking if it was ok
  •  Production schedule, so that we knew where and what time to meet, this is important for us because me and myles were working on another project so having a specific  time and day we would meet made our jobs easier.
  • finalising out audio idea

Coming up with sound idea

This week me and Myles came up with an idea for our audio project and discussed it between each other. At first we thought of  lots of ideas, but didn't know where it was going. Although it was just the audio part we need to concentrate on we still didn't want to be stuck when i came to making the experimental film for it. And therefor we made sure that the audio idea  we was coming up for had a sequence and story to it. Meaning it was something  film-able and not to complicated.

the concept idea for our audio project is about someone wondering and hearing different sounds as they are walking past different locations. The idea of it is to make it feel and sound like if this person is in a dream just passing by different places and hearing different sounds. We also thought that it would be a good idea if the character for the audio would be a female, so that we can hear them whilst they are walking past in their high heels. This way if the high heels stop or anything happens to the sound of the high heels it will leave the audience wondering what has happened.
The type of sounds we plan to get and get them from is :

  • Weststreet- We wanted to record sounds here at night time so that we can have a lot of noises of people, clubs, bars, shops etc. This is a busy location so we will have a great chance of getting the sound that we want.
  • Cathedral- We want to record sounds here so that we have a sense of peaceful sound. This could be used in our audio project after hearing a lot of noisy sound and then a change can happen where we would hear something  quite and peace. This way it will give our audience a break from hearing loud noises.
  • Park -We want to record sound here so that  we have sounds of kids, dogs, ducks, water, tree, leaves etc. This way we have sound of nature too .
  • Cafe-We want to record here so that we have sound of people, newspaper, book , pen, coffee machines and have a sound of sociable place.

Starting Experimental project

This was the week when i was introduced to sound listening for our experimental audio project. Before having to come up with an idea for our audio project me and my class got the chance  to listen to some sounds, and discus what they could of been and what they made us think of. After listening to some sounds we also had the chance to go as a class to difference location to listen to the sounds that was around us. This time we had to get in to groups of two, in which i did with Myles Chimuntanda and then go around the location  and take notes of the things we heard.

The location we went to was :
  • Train Station :- From this place me and Myles picked up sounds like  foot steps, Coffee machines, people sipping in to their drinks, people arguing, announcements,  newspapers being turned, pen, book, someone crossing out what they were writing etc.
  • Cathedral: From this place we got the sense of peacefulness, we heard the atoms sound and echoing when someone walks in to the room, outside noises such as traffic light and construction workers. And because it was a very quite and echoey place you can hear things like people whispering and praying, that gives of another sense of feeling to you.
  • Winter Garden: From this place we hd the sound of water, kids, people passing by, busyness etc

For me this was my first time actually listening to what was around me, normally i hear things that are obvious but i never sat down and actually listened to the littlest things that was around me. So experiencing this is was useful for me,  because when it came to noting down some ideas it came in handy.
